Blepharitis

Blepharitis is a condition where the eyelids become inflamed and can be more common among people with oily skin or dandruff. The inflammation is a result of the meibomian glands, the small oil glands at the base of the eyelashes, becoming clogged with bacteria and/or debris. This interferes with the ability to keep your eyes moist, which can cause dry eyes and lead to infection. At Katonah Eye Care + Aesthetics, we can offer relief from this condition with help from our TempSure® Envi device and other treatment options.

What Are the Symptoms of Blepharitis?

The most common symptoms of blepharitis inflammation are:

  • Swelling
  • Redness of the eyelids and eyes
  • Mucus discharge
  • Itching

In some cases, people may also experience crusting around the eyelids, dryness, chalazion (eyelid cysts), sensitivity to light, and the feeling like there is something foreign in the eye.

Why Do I Have Blepharitis?

If you have naturally oily skin, the glands near your eyelashes can clog more easily, leading to blepharitis. Makeup or environmental factors, such as living or working in a dusty, dry area, can also lead to or exacerbate this condition. Moreover, this issue may come on suddenly with aging, even if you never had any eye problems when you were younger. As we get older, our glands are less able to lubricate our eyes, which can further contribute to this problem. Poor eye care, allowing bacteria to multiply around the eyelid margins, is another major contributing factor.

TempSure® Envi for Blepharitis Relief

For more stubborn cases, a TempSure® Envi for dry eye procedure may be worth considering. This is a fast procedure that is not painful and can work wonders for those suffering from blepharitis.
