Dry Eyes

Normally, your eyes are constantly lubricated and kept moist by the tears produced by your tear glands every time you blink. If you suffer from dry eyes, your glands produce tears that are either lacking in quantity or quality. In order to keep the surface of the eyes properly lubricated you should seek help as soon as possible. Here at Katonah Eye Care + Aesthetics, we can provide you with the attention and treatment you need to help maintain the health of your eyes.

What Are the Symptoms of Dry Eye?

If you are suffering from dry eyes, you will feel a rough, uncomfortable sensation in your eyes. You may blink frequently or be tempted to rub your eyes. Common symptoms include gritty, red, itchy, or irritated eyes. Repeated blinking often does little to resolve these symptoms, and flushing the eyes is only a fleeting solution.

Why Do I Have Dry Eyes?

A common reason for a pervasive dry eye condition is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction or MGD. This occurs when the glands that produce the oil that creates protective tear film are not working properly. The gland function can become disrupted due to:

  • Bacteria
  • Excess oil
  • Debris in the gland

Without a healthy tear film, your tears cannot function properly to lubricate your eyes.

How Do We Treat Dry Eyes?

We have two treatments that are both very effective in resolving issues with dry eyes among our patients. The first is called LipiFlow® for MGD. This is a very popular device that unblocks meibomian glands with minimal discomfort. During treatment with this system, we place special, single-use, sterile activators on the eyes which deliver therapeutic energy known as Vectored Thermal Pulse (VTP) to the eyelid without presenting any danger to the eye itself. The procedure takes roughly 12 minutes to perform and is described by most patients as a gentle eyelid massage.

TempSure® Envi for Dry Eye Treatment

The other option we offer is TempSure® Envi for dry eye. This is a radiofrequency (RF) treatment that targets the meibomian glands with gentle heat at a very specific frequency to enhance collagen production in the eyelid, tightening the lid and allowing tear glands to become unclogged. This procedure is generally considered comfortable and it is not surgical, so there is no downtime afterward.
